Review Rubrics

A Review Rubric is a saved checklist of tasks Engenerate uses to review project documents in chat — for example, checking a set of dam inspection reports against a standard set of inspection criteria. Instead of re-explaining what to look for every time, you save the checklist once and select it when you want a structured review.

What Review Rubrics Are For

Review Rubrics are useful when you need to check documents against the same criteria repeatedly, such as:

  • comparing several inspection or audit reports against a standard checklist
  • verifying compliance items are present and documented
  • running the same quality or safety review across multiple documents at once

Engenerate ships with some built-in rubrics you can use as-is or copy into your own to customize.

Creating a Review Rubric

Review Rubrics are created in Settings → Review Rubrics → New. When you create one, you'll fill in:

  • Name — a short label for the rubric
  • Description (optional) — shown in the picker
  • Domain (optional) — a short tag for the kind of documents this rubric applies to
  • Rubric — the checklist itself, written in markdown
  • Guidance (optional) — free-form notes on tone, priorities, or what "good" looks like, applied across every task in the rubric

Write the rubric as sections and tasks:

## General

### Inspection metadata

Extract the key identifying details (name, identifiers, date, author) and note anything missing or inconsistent.

### Overall assessment [cross-doc]

Capture the stated overall conclusion and quote the supporting sentence.
  • ## Section groups related tasks.
  • ### Task needs an instruction underneath it — that's what Engenerate looks for in each document.
  • ### Task [cross-doc] marks a task that should also be compared side-by-side across documents.

Save the rubric once you're done.

Creating or Editing a Rubric in Chat

Besides filling in the form by hand, you can have Engenerate draft a rubric for you in Do mode:

  • From the menu: open the chat + menu → Review Rubrics, then choose Create in Chat (or an existing rubric's Edit in Chat action). Engenerate switches to Do mode and starts authoring.
  • By asking: in Do mode, just say something like "Create a review rubric for dam inspection reports based on the ASDSO inspection checklist."

When you name a reference (a specific policy or standard), Engenerate finds the matching document in your libraries and drafts the rubric's sections and tasks grounded in that source. If it can't find a matching reference, it drafts from general knowledge and tells you no source was attached.

Engenerate then shows a proposal card with the sections and tasks it drafted. Review it and click Save to My Rubrics to save it as a new rubric. Editing a rubric in chat always produces a new copy — your original stays as-is.

Using a Review Rubric in Chat

Review Rubrics are available from a project workspace, since a review works against your project's documents.

Open the chat + menu, go to Capabilities → Review Rubrics, and select a rubric. Engenerate inserts a rubric badge into your message with every task selected. Click the badge to open a task list where you can turn individual tasks off — at least one task must stay selected.

Before sending, make sure the documents you want reviewed are part of the conversation — either pinned as Resources or referenced inline in the same message. Then send your message; Engenerate reviews each document against the selected tasks and returns:

  • an executive summary
  • a comparison table across documents, when more than one is reviewed
  • per-document findings with page citations and quoted evidence

The rubric badge applies to the message it's attached to — a follow-up message without the badge is treated as normal chat, not another review.

Narrowing a Review

You don't need to redo the whole rubric to adjust scope. In a follow-up message you can ask Engenerate to narrow or repeat part of the review, for example:

"Re-check only the embankment section in the 2026 report."

Engenerate re-runs just that task against that document rather than reviewing the full set again.

Saving and Exporting Results

Like any chat response, you can Copy a review or Send to Notebook to keep it and export it later (for example as a branded DOCX report). See Notebooks for more on saving and exporting.
