Output Templates
An Output Template is a saved markdown outline — section headings plus short guidance notes — that Engenerate follows when composing a final response. Instead of describing the structure you want every time, you save it once and apply it when you need consistent, report-ready formatting.
What Output Templates Are For
Output Templates are useful when you want the same shape of deliverable every time, such as:
- a standard memo or letter format your firm always uses
- a recurring report structure (executive summary, findings, recommendations, references)
- a specific outline required by a client or reviewing agency
A template is a skeleton, not a filled-in answer — it shapes structure and headings, and Engenerate leaves a section blank when the conversation doesn't have the data to fill it.
Creating an Output Template
Output Templates are created in Settings → Output Templates → New. When you create one, you'll fill in:
- Name — a short label for the template
- Description (optional) — shown in the picker so you can tell templates apart
- Template content — the markdown outline itself
Write section headings as ## Section Name, with a short guidance note underneath each one describing what belongs there. For example:
## Overview
Short summary of the topic the user asked about.
## Key Findings
List the main results, values, or conclusions here.
## Supporting Details
Tables, quotes, or numeric values that back up the findings.
## References
Citations or source labels from the gathered inputs.
Save the template once you're done.
Creating or Editing a Template in Chat
Besides filling in the form by hand, you can have Engenerate author a template for you in Do mode:
- From the menu: open the chat + menu → Output Templates, then choose Create in Chat (or an existing template's Edit in Chat action). Engenerate switches to Do mode and starts authoring.
- By asking: in Do mode, just say something like "Create an output template for a dam safety inspection memo based on ER 1110-2-1156."
If you point Engenerate at a reference document, that document is used only to guide the structure and terminology — its text is never copied into the template.
Engenerate then shows a proposal card with the outline it drafted. Review it and click Save to My Output Templates to save it as a new template. Editing a template in chat always produces a new copy — your original stays as-is.
Using an Output Template in Chat
Open the chat + menu, go to Capabilities → Output Templates, and choose a template to apply for the current message. Engenerate will follow that outline when composing its response, leaving out any section the conversation doesn't support.
When a template is selected, the prompt footer shows a template icon you can click to open a read-only preview (name, description, and outline). From there you can Remove the template, Edit it in the form dialog, or Edit in Chat.
