Plans
Plans help you turn an open-ended request into a structured sequence of work.
What Plans Are For
Use a plan when:
- the task has multiple steps
- you want to capture assumptions or constraints before execution
- you expect to turn the work into a report or notebook deliverable
In practice, Plan is where you shape the work and Do is where you carry it out.
When to Use Plan vs Do
| Mode | Use It When |
|---|---|
| Plan | You need a draft workflow, ordered tasks, or a clearer scope |
| Do | You already know what should happen next and want Engenerate to execute the work |
If you are still deciding what the task should include, start in Plan. If the structure is already settled, move to Do.
Creating a Plan
Plans are created from chat. A typical pattern is:
- In Analyze, ask a grounded question or describe the deliverable you need
- Switch to Plan
- Refine the proposed plan until the steps, assumptions, and scope look right
This gives you a reusable structure before execution begins.
When Chat Suggests Plan Mode
If you send a request that looks like a multi-step report or deliverable while you are still in Analyze, Engenerate may pause send and show a short suggestion above the prompt:
- Switch to Plan Mode — continue with that message in Plan
- Stay in Analyze Mode — keep Analyze (this is the default if you wait out the countdown)
You can dismiss it and stay in Analyze whenever you only want an in-chat draft.
The Plan Panel
The plan panel is the main place to manage saved plans inside a workspace.
From the panel you can:
- select an existing plan
- open a newly created plan
- rename or delete a plan
- edit the plan content directly
- keep working while changes autosave
Each workspace can contain multiple plans, so you can separate alternatives, scenarios, or report paths.
Editing and Autosave
Plan edits save automatically as you work. This makes plans behave more like a live working document than a static prompt.
That is useful when you are:
- refining tasks after reviewing sources
- updating assumptions
- adjusting the order of work before execution
Active Plan Context
When a plan is selected, it becomes the active plan for that workspace flow. In Plan or Do, Engenerate can use that plan as the current structure for the conversation.
This helps keep follow-up messages aligned with the same objective instead of treating each turn as a fresh request.
Executing a Plan
Use Execute Plan when you are ready to run the work. Execution opens a new chat tab and processes the plan's tasks in order.
You can choose:
- the model used for execution
- whether web search should be enabled for that run
This keeps plan authoring separate from plan execution while preserving the same workspace context.
Plans and Notebooks
Plans work well with notebooks:
- use the plan to structure the work
- use chat to generate grounded outputs
- use Send to Notebook to collect sections you want to keep
- refine and export the notebook when the draft is ready
This is one of the most effective ways to move from investigation to a finished report.
