Billing and usage help you manage document processing, chat, and web search from one account balance.
Overview
Engenerate uses a single usage balance, shown as a dollar amount, to fund document processing, chat with any model, and web search. There is no separate credits-vs-allowance split — every paid action draws from the same balance.
What Your Usage Balance Is Used For
Your usage balance is consumed for three types of activity:

Document processing — Usage is deducted when a document is processed and its content is extracted and indexed. The cost depends on the size and complexity of the document.

Chat — Usage is deducted each time you send a chat message, based on the number of tokens consumed in the conversation (your message plus the model's response), charged at the model provider's published API token rate with 0% rate markup.

Web search — Usage is deducted per web search call, based on search depth.
Your Usage Balance
Your usage balance is visible in Account → Billing and in the application header. It is added to from three sources:

One month of included usage is available at a time. If you pay annually, you pay the year up front; included usage is still released month by month at the same monthly amount — not as a year unlock on day one. Unused included usage expires at month end and does not carry over.

How usage appears in the app
- Header (paid tiers): Included monthly usage remaining: P%. Balance: / Org Balance: is purchased usage plus any remaining signup bonus. It appears when there is no included allotment (Free) or included remaining is under 1%.
- Account → Billing card: Included Monthly Usage ($N) remaining: and Purchased balance:. On Team,
$Nis the per-seat amount, not seats × $N.
Document processing rates
Most documents are billed per credit: one credit for each page, each table, and each figure found in the document. The rate is $0.04/credit. Enterprise organizations can have a custom negotiated rate.
Plan Sheets have a $0.50 surcharge per sheet, in addition to the page, table, and figure credits. For example, a 10-sheet plan set with no tables or figures costs $5.40 (10 credits at $0.04 plus 10 Plan Sheets at $0.50).
Your rate is shown in the cost estimate before you upload. The estimate counts pages only, so a plan set can cost more than the estimate. If it costs more than your balance, see When a Charge Exceeds Your Balance.
Word documents
Word files (.docx) are billed a little differently — pages are a flat rate, and tables and figures use the same rate as your other documents:

A 12-page Word document with 2 tables and 1 figure costs $0.24 at the standard rate. Pages are counted from the PDF version we create while processing, so the final page count can differ from what Word shows. Other Office files (.doc, .ppt, .pptx) are converted to PDF and billed per credit like a PDF.
Chat Pricing
All chat models draw from the same usage balance — there is no free or allowance-based tier. Models are charged at their published input and output token rates.

Adding Usage
If you need more usage beyond your monthly included amount, use Add Usage on Account → Billing in any custom dollar amount between $10 and $10,000. Top-ups are applied to your balance immediately and last 12 months. Free accounts do not show Add Usage.
When a Charge Exceeds Your Balance
Document processing is always charged, even when it costs more than your remaining balance. In that case:
- Your balance goes negative (for example, Balance: -$4.20).
- New work is paused in that workspace — chat, uploads, reprocessing, and workflow runs — until the balance is topped up.
- The affected documents are locked. You can still see them in your Resources and Library lists, marked with the amount owed, but their content, figures, and original file cannot be opened or used in chat until they are paid for.
Adding usage (or your next monthly included usage) repays what is owed first, oldest documents first. Each document unlocks as soon as its amount is repaid, and new work resumes once nothing is owed. A chat or web search that runs past your balance is handled the same way, but does not lock any document.
Deleting a locked document does not clear the amount owed.
Team Usage Pool
When you work in a Team project, usage comes only from the shared Team pool. Your personal balance is not a fallback. The header switches to the Team pool (Org Balance: when purchased usage is shown). Included usage scales with seats. The billing card still labels included remaining with the per-seat amount.
Managing Your Usage
- Keep an eye on your usage balance before processing large batches of documents or starting a long chat session.
- Review per-model pricing and set your active models and default in Settings > General > Models.
- Add usage from Account → Billing any time your purchased balance runs low (paid plans).
