Backcheck

Backcheck follows findings from an earlier package into the package that continues it. It answers one question: which earlier findings is the reviewer still responsible for?

Turn It On

Backcheck needs a package that continues another. Set Continues when you create the package. The Backcheck tab then appears next to Findings. On Setup, check the Replaces column so each file is paired with the earlier file it replaces. See Packages.

Backcheck reads the earlier package. It does not create, close, or change findings on it.

Read the Table

ColumnMeaning
PackageThe earlier package the finding came from
HintWhat the product sees in the revised file
VerdictYour call, if you have made one
DueWhether the finding is due in this package
MatchedHow the earlier quote was matched

The Hint comes from the latest completed run. It is a prompt to look, not a verdict:

HintMeaning
Still printedThe quoted text is still in the revised file
ChangedThe quoted text was partly changed
Not found in revised fileThe quoted text is no longer in the revised file
UnreadableThe revised page could not be read
File not pairedNo earlier file is paired with a revised file for this finding

The product never writes a verdict for you.

Record a Verdict

Select a row to open it. You can see the earlier package's finding, its quotes with Found on p.N or Not found, and history. Then choose a verdict, with an optional note:

  • Addressed — the revised package fixed it
  • Still open — it remains a problem
  • Deferred — postponed. Choose the phase under Defer to phase

To record the same verdict on several rows, tick them and use the buttons above the table.

Filter by verdict (None, Addressed, Still open, Deferred) or by due (Due, Not due).

What Is Due

A deferred item becomes due when the package you are viewing has reached that phase. A package with no phase shows Phase not set and treats every item as due. Set Phase in Package actions > Information to use deferral.

In Reports

A findings report or comment log can include a backcheck section. An RFI does not. See Manage and Reports.
